Ultimate Rivals: The Rink is the latest game to find its way onto the Apple Arcade roster, which is seeing more one-off additions lately rather than the four or five games at once we saw in the first couple of months. Anyway, Ultimate Rivals: The Rink is 3v3 hockey game where you can play as sports stars from several other sports.

That means you can see how the NBA, NFL and Soccer players fair on the rink. How good is Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster on skates? Does LeBron James' natural athleticism translate to ice hockey?

In reality, probably not. But in a game with caricatured versions of famous male and female sports stars, anything is possible. Particularly since Ultimate Rivals is making no attempt to be realistic whatsoever - players have ultimate abilities and access to Turbo speed so they can move faster than humanly possible.

It's all played on various neon coloured rinks, little green rocks explode out of the goalie whenever they make a save that can be scooped up to build your ultimate meter. You can reduce players health by checking them enough, leaving them out of the game temporarily. Its aim seems to be to capture the essence of ice hockey with big hits and fast-paced action, without burdening players with the ruleset.

There are 58 pro athletes in total, with more apparently on the way. You'll set up your team by picking a goalie and two outfield players based on their various stats. From there you can hop into a singleplayer mode or jump online to test your hockey skills against other players.

Ultimate Rivals: The Rink is available now through Apple Arcade, which is a gaming subscription that costs $4.99 per month. For more details on other games that are available on Apple Arcade check out our dedicated hub.
