Crossy Road Castle, coming soon to Apple Arcade, is a wild departure for the series

If you’re reading this, chances are you played and remember the 2014 megahit Crossy Road. Hipster Whale’s original game mixed Frogger-like gameplay with casual free-to-play elements and a fairly distinctive art style. The team then followed it up with Disney Crossy Road, which featured characters and locations from the likes of Monsters Inc., Toy Story, and The Lion King.

Now, however, Hipster Whale has clearly opted to do something a little different, as the newly announced Crossy Road Castle is actually a multiplayer platformer. It sees up to four players working their way through a series of tricky levels, tackling common enemies and battling bosses as they go. Some familiar faces pop up throughout the trailer, including the Crossy Road chicken and eagle, but there's no doubt that Castle is otherwise a wild departure for the series.

Polygon mentions that it’ll support controllers, which a big relief considering that fast-paced platformers don’t always work well using touchscreen controls. Castle also features local multiplayer for up to four players, and – at launch – you can expect one playable level. This is called “Unihorse Tower”, and it sees you scaling what appears to be an endless castle tower. Polygon also confirms that more levels and characters are set to arrive after launch.

Unfortunately for Android players, Crossy Road Castle is yet another Apple Arcade mobile exclusive. It’s slated to launch later this year onto Apple’s $4.99-a-month subscription service. In the meantime, if you’re still playing them, I’d recommend checking out our extensive guides for both the original Crossy Road and Disney Crossy Road.
