Pokémon Masters has landed, but if you've just started the game and realised you can't seem to participate in co-op mode, well, you're not alone.

I'll tell you this: co-op mode is in the game, and you can play it right now, but you will need to follow some steps to actually unlock the mode, and that might not be as easy as you think.

Co-op mode involves you partnering up with other Pokémon Masters players online, either in a random matching or with your friends. The good news is that matchmaking it really good so far, and has quickly given me online partners.

If you want more friends to partner up with online, make sure to check out our friend code post. If you want more information on leveling up, evolving, and much more, make sure to check out our Ultimate Guide to Pokémon Masters.

But for now, read on for even more on how to unlock and win in co-op mode…

How to unlock co-op mode

To unlock co-op mode, you actually need to make your way through ten chapters of the main story, and one chapter of an interlude story featuring Brock.

That means you will need to increase the strength of your Pokémon a hell of a lot before you get to co-op mode, and you should check out our guides from our Ultimate Guide in order to power up quickly and make progress fast.

Once you've gotten to this point, you should have all five league badges, and a bunch of sync-pairs fully powered up and ready to take on any opponents. If you don't, then it's time to earn some gems, get more sync-pairs, and then get leveling them up as much as possible through the training mode. Once that's complete, you'll be ready to play online in co-op mode.

Slightly different rules

You won't be speeding up the pace of battle while you're online, that's for sure, and between all six on-screen players, you might be waiting a little while for your turn. That means you really need to think ahead and not waste your move when it's your turn.

You'll also notice your energy gauge slows to a crawl. This co-op mode makes support moves which affect your whole party much more effective, and moves which will the gauge much more useful.

You can swap between three Pokémon you bring with you into battle at any time, though that swap takes up a turn, so this is another thing you will have to think ahead with.

2
Unity

There's a new mechanic in co-op battles, and that is unity. Over time, you will fill a meter with your combined attacks, which will then boost your attack strength for a time, and finally you will unleash all of your strength in a final attack.

There's a catch, though. The attack will be much stronger if it's super effective, and all of the types being used by the players on the field are the same. For example, three electric types in a row.

This final attack will be much more powerful and effective than a sync attack.

Please don't auto battle

Don't do this for me, nor for yourself - do it for your team mates.

Auto battle is fine, if ineffective, when it comes to powering through many of the battles in the game. You are, of course, more effective if you play yourself, but auto battle is often fine. But not when it comes to co-op battles.

I mean, come on. You're not just wasting your own turn, you are potentially wasting the turn of everyone you're playing with, throwing the game away with wrong moves and weird Pokémon switch decisions. Forget auto battles, just do it yourself if you want it done properly.
