The Pokemon Company and DeNA’s highly anticipated Pokemon Masters has finally been given the firm release date of August 29th. We’ve known for some time that it would be launching this summer, but – considering it was only announced back in May – it’s still strange to think that we’re now so close to being able to play it. Those who want to get in as early as possible can pre-register ahead of launch on either the App Store or Google Play.

Pokemon Masters takes place on the all-new island region of Pasio, a hotspot for up-and-coming trainers that is also home to the Pokemon Masters League tournament. As you can imagine, the entire region is bursting with trainers to meet, team up with, or battle.

It appears to be an almost fully-fledged, traditional Pokemon game, with a sizable island to explore and an interesting focus on intense 3-on-3 battles. Each trainer can perform a special sync move with their paired Pokemon, and there are also battle-ending unity attacks that light up the screen with impressive effects. There are set to be 65 sync pairs at launch, with the plan being to add more and more as part of the game’s ongoing updates.

Trainers are now more involved in battles than ever, with their new ability to provide support in the form of health and stat buffs. This adds another layer of strategy to the combat, requiring you to think tactically about when to buff and when to hang back.

Pokemon Masters is now available for pre-registration over on both the App Store and Google Play. It’s set to be one of the biggest games of the summer, though whether it’s one of the best remains to be seen.
