So, Candy Crush Friends Saga is currently sat on top of the US and UK App Store free game charts, chuckling imperiously at the whelps far below it.

King's colourful sweet-swapper has certainly hit the spot. In terms of quality, we found it to be pretty good fun, if a little on the predictable side.

This is pretty much Candy Crush 2.0, with more impressive graphics and a greater emphasis on personalisation.

What we're trying to say is that you can't really go wrong with Candy Crush Friends Saga. But can you go better? We think that you can.

Once you find yourself itching for something similar but new, check out these Candy Crush Friends Saga alternatives.

Zookeeper Battle

This is an old one, but boy is it still good. Zookeeper DX sticks to a similar blend of block-swapping and matching to Candy Crush Friends Saga, but here the blocks are cute little animals in an adorable zoo.

Soon enough, you're matching a crazy number of animals to order. If the idea of paying for a game seems outrageous to you these days, then Zookeeper Battle does similar things for free.

Bejeweled Stars

Bejeweled Stars

Candy Crush Saga inherited the casual match-3 crown (in terms of popularity, at least) from Bejeweled - a similarly colourful game of swapping coloured baubles and forming huge chains.

Bejeweled Stars saw the series essentially doing what Candy Crush Friends Saga has done, subtly reworking the formula with big dose of bonus polish. PopCap is the original master at this sort of thing, so Candy Crush fans should really check it out.

Scurvy Scallywags

Developer: Gilbert & Kauzlaric
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Puzzle, RPG
Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match–3 Pirate RPG

Perhaps Candy Crush Friends Saga is just a little too saccharine sweet for you. Or perhaps you want a little more depth and heft to your block-swapping action.

Meet Scurvy Scallywags, a hilarious match-three puzzler that folds in pirate puns, RPG-lite battles, and sea shanties. It's an absolute hoot.

TwoDots

We're really pulling out all the classics here. Four years ago, Dots was one of those colour-matching games that really caught fire, thanks to a mix of stylish visuals and irresistible gameplay.

It still plays beautifully, though we should note that you're not swapping coloured tiles here so much as linking them. The end effect is similarly intoxicating.

Tiny Bubbles

Developer: Pine Street Codeworks
Available on: iOS + Android + Steam
Genre: Puzzle

Tiny Bubbles

And now for something a little different. Tiny Bubbles has as much charm and sheer eye-popping colour as Candy Crush Friends Saga, but it genuinely offers something different to the match-three genre.

This time you're popping and manipulating clusters of coloured bubbles in various ways so as to form those matches. It's a tactile, fresh, and surprisingly varied experience.
