Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is finally here on Nintendo Switch, and yes, it's… well it's obtuse if you're not already used to Monster Hunter.

If you've come over from World, you probably already know how this is going to go, and if you've played Generations or 4 Ultimate, you'll feel pretty safe. But what if you're a Monster Hunter noob? Well…

It's a deep game with a lot to learn, but we've got some very quick and entirely essential tips for you right here, that will help you settle into slicing dinosaurs on the go.

Well armed

There's loads of weapons to choose from in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, from speedy, light attacks, and giant, damaging swings.

Picking a weapon set you're comfortable with is important. From the outset, you'll get a base version of every weapon in your chest at home, and you can freely pick and try out whichever weapons you prefer.

Go out into simpler hunt and gathering quests while trying out your weaponry, and feel free to keep switching things up depending on what prey you're hunting.

Kitty crusader

One of the most valuable possible partners you'll ever have is your Palico, a precious pussy who's willing to put its life on the line for you.

You need a real courageous kitty to face off against massive monsters with you. To the right side of the base village is a Palico ranch, where you can get new Palicoes, and take them on quests and hunts with you.

Taking along at least one Palico is going to help you massively in the long run - even if they don't hit enemies hard, they can make for a pretty good distraction while you heal up!

Before you go…

Preparation really is half the battle in Monster Hunter. Before you go out on any quest, you will want to ensure you've crafted all the things you need, taken useless items out of your inventory, fully stocked up on potions, etc.

What will speed this up massively is making an item loadout. At the chest near the exit, you can set up your inventory, and then save it as it is. You can then reload that inventory in the future, with any excess items you have put away, and any you're missing refilled from stock.

This is a much faster way to organise your inventory and will save your hours in the long run. Also, remember to take quest items from the blue chest at the start of every hunt!

The hunt

Hunts are, of course, where the game finally gets serious. If you're not tasked with killing smaller monsters or gathering materials, then it'll be time to fight big beasties.

Of course by now you should already have tried out your weapons and how they work, it's just a case of putting it all into practice.

Just make sure to be ready with the dodge buttons, and be aware of your hunter skills, they can save your skin at the right moment.
