An unexpected delight

Earlier today we heard a rumour or two about Nintendo holding a super sudden and secret Nindie presentation this afternoon and, for once, the rumours were actually true.

Thrown up in a sudden Tweet via Nintendo Europe we got a new Indie Highlights video filled with 22 minutes of indie goodness.

If you think you're in for only sneak peeks and announcements, though, you're going to be pleasantly surprised... or perturbed depending on the state of your wallet.

Because we're nice, we've meticulously gone through the footage and listed out everything you need to know right here, so keep on reading. Ahhh, so easy and convenient.

1
Night Call

  • Publisher: Raw Fury
  • Release: Early 2019

This monochromatic investigative game utterly drips with noire charm.

As the body count starts to rise in the streets of modern-day Paris, it's your job to help solve a series of grisly murders before it's too late. Oh, and you're not donning your detective hat in the traditional sense - you're a taxi driver who just happened to see the most recent victim alive.

Aside from putting your brain to work, you've also got to pay your bills on the side so be sure to make enough each night. Pick up the right passengers and ask the right questions and you might just crack the case.

2
Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom

  • Publisher: FDG Entertainment
  • Release: November 6th 2018

Play as Jin and save Monster World Kingdom in this gorgeous action-adventure game.

From its hand-drawn animations to its neat collection of six forms to scrolls between, this looks like yet another enjoyable adventure, and it's been made alongside the creator of the original Wonder Boy (you can see it pretty clearly).

This looks like a really interesting game which'll allow you to experiment with different forms to reach tricky areas. I don't know why, but these are always such a soft spot in my book.

3
The Gardens Between

  • Publisher: The Voxel Agents
  • Release: September 20th 2018

The Gardens Between is a gorgeous and rather trippy puzzler featuring best friends, Arina and Frendt. When they fall into a series of fantastical gardens together they head off on an emotional journey based on their friendship and the memories they've built together.

I don't know about you, but I'm super excited to get ahold of this one. Not only striking to look at, its ambient score is sure to sink us right into the mystery and I can't wait.

4
Streets of Rogue

  • Publisher: tinyBuild
  • Release: Winter 2018

Coming to Switch with four-player co-op and exclusive enhancements, this entirely bananas brawler is about to take you for a ride.

Streets of Rogue is a rogue-lite all about player choice and how you want to tackle the mission goals. Seriously, whatever way you fancy going about the procedurally-generated cities it's totally fair game.

5
Bad North

Bad North is a beautiful (and seriously brutal) real-time tactical roguelite.

Defend your home from Viking invaders and command your armies to take full advantage of the unique shapes of each island. There's going to be blood - the question is, will it be yours or theirs?

6
11bit Studio updates

Yes, rather than just showing off a particular game 11bit Studios showed off a bunch of them.

Starting off with Moonlighter, this action-RPG with roguelike elements will have you going about your daily business as Will, whilst also secretly going on crazy adventures. Coming Autumn 2018.

Next up is This War of Mine, one of my personal favourite games so this is very exciting. War isn't just about the soldiers, it's also about the civilians caught in the middle and that's what this survival game touches on. Coming November 2018.

Children of Morta is a striking pixel adventure game where you'll play as a family of heroes. Having guarded the powerful Mount Morta for generations, it's time to band together as a family and fight the spreading corruption. Coming early 2019.

7
Everspace

  • Publisher: Rockfish Games
  • Release: December 2018

This single-player roguelike shooter will keep you on your toes as you head off on a dangerous, albeit captivating, journey through space.

Test your skills, take on dangerous missions, face new challenges each time you load up, and prepare for death no matter where you are.

The Switch version features both the base game and the Encounters expansion.

8
Baba Is You

  • Publisher: Hempuli
  • Release: Autumn 2018

Just because a game has rules doesn't mean you can't change them, and that's what Baba Is You is all about.

Change how each level works by pushing blocks and messing about with the rule and watch as things take effect in the most curious ways. Create new pathways, make boxes pushable, and much, much more.

9
Slay the Spire

  • Publisher: Mega Crit Games/Humble Bundle
  • Release: Early 2019

If you prefer single-player games and enjoy a good deckbuilder, this one's going to tickle you right up.

You need to choose your cards with care in your attempt to climb the Spire, but don't get too comfortable in its layout. Each time you climb you'll face a different challenge.

Pick up and use relics (at your own risk), combine harmonious cards to take out enemies, and pick your path wisely as you progress. We won't judge you for taking the 'safe' path.

10
Windjammers / Windjammers 2

  • Publisher: Dotemu

Get ready to dive into the original flying disc game as it nips out on Nintendo Switch. Fast paced, competitive, pixellated - it's everything you want from a sports game. Oh, and it's coming out on October 23rd 2018.

That's not all Dotemu had it store, however. No, you've also got Windjammers 2 heading out in 2019. Though we didn't get a whole lot of information about it, we'll be throwing discs, catching 'em, and throwing them back at our opponents, I'm sure.

11
Terraria

  • Publisher: Re-Logic
  • Release: 2019

I don't think I have to explain what Terraria is, but just in case - it's a huge sandbox RPG where you can explore, fight, build, and discover the world of Terraria at your leisure.

It's out on pretty much every platform, but will Nintendo Switch be the ultimate version? We'll just have to wait and see.

12
Prison Architect

  • Publisher: Double Eleven/Introversion Software
  • Release: Right now

If you haven't had the chance to play it yet, Prison Architect is a rather addictive prison management game which lets you build and run your maximum-security jail exactly as you imagine it.

From basic cell structure, to work-out areas, and maybe a cheerful execution chamber. Use whatever you need to make your beloved prisoners happy (ish), or face a good ol' fashioned riot if you're not quite up to spec.

The Switch edition include the base game and two expansions: All Day And A Night and Psych Ward. Plus, you'll also be seeing the ever-popular escape mode make an appearance later this summer.

13
Morphies Law

  • Publisher: Cosmoscope
  • Release: Tonight

Morphies Law is a body-morphing 3D shooter where both seasoned veterans with mad skills and total noobies can play together without wanting to tear each other apart.

Each time you hit an enemy player, one of your limbs will grow in size whilst the person who got hit shrinks down. We've been waiting for it for a good, long while and we've almost got our hands on it. Are you excited? I'm excited.
