Four years later, a Metroid easter egg is discovered in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

A twitter user had just discovered a Metroid easter egg in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze some four years after the game launched on Wii U. A video archiving the finding shows a Metroid hatchling floating in the background of Level 4-3, Amiss Abyss. The easter egg appears in both Wii U and Switch versions of the game.

Players have to go through quite a process to make the Metroid appear. Players traverse the Amiss Abyss until they happen upon an underwater tunnel about halfway through the level. If you’re chasing this particular easter egg, you’ll have to traverse the tunnel, then swim back through backwards, this time dodging the dangerous obstacles that have suddenly appeared. Players will encounter electric seaweed, and will need to take damage to become invincible to it. Once that’s done, the Metroid will appear briefly in the background. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was actually developed by Retro Studios, who also worked on the Metroid Prime Trilogy for GameCube and Wii, so it’s fitting that Metroid would make a brief appearance.
