Swing King and The Temple of Bling review - A one-touch arcade blast that's well worth your time

Swing King and The Temple of Bling has more than a bit of Nitrome in its blood. It's a one-touch arcade experience with cute graphics and a difficulty curve that's not for the faint of heart.

It's also an awful lot of fun, and when you push past a particularly challenging level, you might feel compelled to let out a little whoop of joy. Maybe hold it in if you're on the bus.

There's a lot to like here, and if you're a fan of simple arcade entertainment, then it's definitely worth swooping over to the App Store and getting it picked up.

The game sees you playing a monkey. Said monkey flies into the levels from the bottom of the screen. There are special blocks in the levels, and these are your method of transportation.

Push a finger down and you'll grab onto a block, spinning around it as you do. Lift up your finger and you'll shoot off in the direction you're spinning. And that's about it.

It's a simple scheme, but the game piles on obstacles and difficulties at an alarming rate, and while each challenge is only a few screens long, you're going to have trouble finishing them in a single go.

Spikes protrude from the walls, giant gates smash shut, bees float around menacingly, their pointy stings waiting greedily to end your run. But as well as testing your reactions, there's a puzzling core to the game.

You need to work out how to get past the things that are trying to kill you. You can bounce off walls, and you'll need to do it in order to change the direction of your spin.

Once you've worked out what you need to do, you have to put your plan into action. And quite often that's easier said than done.

There are coins to collect. You can spend these on opening up checkpoints, or you can watch a video to save your progress. You'll need to as well, because there's a lot of game here and starting from the beginning is a tough ask.

Swing King and The Temple of Bling is a smart twist on the one-touch mobile game. It's quick, it's clever, and while it's not perfect, it should still get pride of place on your homescreen for a few weeks.
