App Army Assemble: Pixelgrams

Tetris meets jigsaw in this interesting puzzler

App Army Assemble: Pixelgrams
|

If you crossed a jigsaw puzzle with Tetris, the result would quite closely resemble Pixelgrams, a brand new puzzler out right now in the App Store.

In Pixelgrams, you're given the outline of an object, and have to fill it with a bunch of pixelated puzzle pieces (or polyominoes for the non-laymen amongst you).

When we casted a critical eye over it at review, we said: "It looks like a cute, fun puzzler, but Pixelgrams' puzzle design is too obtuse to be anything more than irritating."

But don't just take our word for it. We also gave access to our hardened pool of mobile gaming experts in the App Army. Read on for their thoughts.

So far this is an easy puzzler that may get more challenging. I've swung through the first 8 puzzles with ease and, despite a little boredom, I'm still playing.

The ads are rather annoying though. In fact, on one occasion an ad played as soon as I opened the game.

Pixelgrams has potential, but I have no idea what the shapes are meant to be. The puzzles are also very easy. You've almost got to start by guessing where a few of the shapes go and then the rest fit in.

It's ok I guess, but not anything that can keep me hooked for long!

This could be a great little game but for me it isn't quite there. To begin with, you can't actually see what the object you're making looks like as you're only given a silhouette and a description. Most finished pictures only look vaguely as described.

I would have preferred lots more pieces too. And I removed a piece that didn't fit once and it froze, which meant I had to start the object again.

All in all the makings of a good game but not sure if I'm interested enough to go beyond chapter one.

I'm enjoying it. Some puzzles make more sense than others so you have to rely on a bit of trial and error. The art style is great but I'd have liked the clues to have been a little more useful.

Getting three stars can be tricky on certain levels where all you're presented with is a big black blob.
