We chat with Ateam about Unison League's Evangelion inspired update

The company behind popular Japanese RPG Unison League has bagged collaboration with Evangelion to bring exclusive new content unique to mobile gaming.

Ateam’s Unison League was released in 2015, and was an immediate hit with fans of online RPGs. You’re tasked with adventuring across the varied terrain of Granvia, a land replete with dangers. You create and customise your own hero, join guilds, make friends and take on monsters in co-operative battles – all with a view to saving the world.

Battling monsters and saving the world is pretty much the premise behind Evangelion, too. The hugely successful anime franchise took Japan by storm in the 90s, featuring a futuristic fight for humanity’s survival in a dystopian Tokyo. The series was so successful that there are still new film installments coming out every few years, and its influence has even reached the racing world. This latest update to Unison League is the product of a tie-up with Evangelion Racing and promises the appearance of characters and content never before seen on the mobile platform.

Evangelion Racing is a real-life racing project with sports cars and superbikes competing in events across Japan. There aren’t any of the monstrous mecha from the anime in competition, but everything is given the Evangelion aesthetic. Even the promotional models, or ‘speed queens’, are modeled on characters from the series.

With this new collaboration, Ateam and Evangelion are introducing a ton of content for you to play with. You can give your Unison League character an Evangelion makeover with new customisation items, including cosmetics allowing you to battle as protagonists Shinji, Asuka and Rei, or even as the iconic mechas Unit 01 and 02. A whole heap of new attack animations have been thrown in for good measure, and there’s a cheeky log-in bonus to unlock – Rei Ayanami in a speed queen outfit. Cue excited blushes the world over.

This isn’t just an excuse to tinker with your character’s attire, though. The new content package will include an original plot set to unfold over two weeks. Each chapter offers a further story development, as well as the opportunity for players to unlock brand new items.

We spoke to Unison League developer Ateam about it's collaboration with Evangelion in bringing to you this exciting new in game event.

Which Evangelion characters can we expect to see in the game?

"Along with main characters like Shinji and Rei, you can expect to see the different Evangelion Units and several Angels. Also, character costumes will be available as cosmetic items, so you can style your player on your favorite Evangelion protagonist!"

What special abilities will they bring to the fight?

"We will see the addition of an "A.T. Field" that will block against all damage until a certain threshold is reached. We'll also see a new Unison effect called "Frenzy" that will prevent status ailments and debuffs for a set period of time, but it will also restrict the Abilities you can use while it is in effect."

What strategy tips do you recommend?

"Special Evangelion Weapons that can be obtained from Spawns will do extra damage to enemies and award more points in the collaboration event. These weapons will really help you glide through Quests and to the top of the rankings."

Can we expect to see special contests?

"There will be special event Quests added every day of the collaboration. Players will also be able to obtain Rei in a race queen outfit as a special login bonus."

Will we see any unique tactical events?

"An event Quest that can be unlocked with a special item will be available. This event Quest will award more points than regular event Quests. You can earn tons of points in this special event Quest and get to the top of the rankings to get tons of rewards!"

What was the experience like collaborating on this latest update?

"This is the first collaboration event in the global version of Unison League, and we know that our players have waited a long time for this, so we'd like to thank them for their patience and support. There will be lots of fun content in this event, so we hope it'll keep them entertained for many an hour!"

Will you be collaborating with anyone in future for more in game events?

"Yes, we are in fact making preparations for another collaboration event. We cannot share any details just yet, but keep a look out on our forums and Facebook page for teasers to come!"

Unison League is available to download on iOS and Android.
