Afterland – Frustratingly passive

| Afterland

Afterland feels like two different games, but unfortunately lacks the interactivity of one.

Initially it presents itself like a mysterious and esoteric visual novel, set in a creepy world ruled by the infamous One-Eyed Rabbit. The art is distinctive, the music is eerie and catchy, and I was hugely intrigued.

Before long though, the free to play game reveals its full hand -it's a CCG, and not a good one.

You battle against progressively larger decks, but unlike most card battlers, you can't do anything.

Save for changing your formation (which makes little difference), there's no way to swap strategy or influence matches at all, they simply play out by themselves as you watch.

Added to that a non-existent introduction to the mechanics, and you get a pretty but frustrating card game - that isn't really a game at all.

Afterland – Frustratingly passive

Afterland's initially pleasing art and soundtrack are ruined by the lack of interactivity and sweeping sense of confusion
