Square Enix has released Final Fantasy XIII-2 on iOS and Android in Japan.

Yes, it's the same RPG released in 2012 on PS3 and Xbox 360 (but operable with touch controls). How is that possible?

Square Enix has used the same cloud-based streaming service it used for Final Fantasy XIII to achieve this.

What this means is that the game is being played on a server somewhere in Japan and you're just tuning in to issue instructions. It then beams the result back to your phone or tablet.

Due to this, you'll probably have a bit of a hard time playing the game outside of Japan. There might be a bit of a delay plus, you know, it'll be in Japanese.

It seems that, as with Final Fantasy XIII, you can get a free hour-long trial of the game. Then, if you want unlimited streaming capabilities, you pay 2400 yen (about £13 / $17).

This service probably won't be heading to the west but, hey, you never know.

You can grab Final Fantasy XIII-2 on the Japanese App Store and Google Play.
