We don't envy the developer trying to make a fresh, interesting endless climber. Rather like one of these formidable games, it's an increasingly difficult task.

But The Ascension falls at the first hurdle. It's just not any fun to play.

The idea is to send a bouncing ball as high as possible, this time by tapping the screen to rotate a cylindrical formation of platforms. You bounce it up through a gap, and land on a solid platform.

This is a frustrating task thanks to the indistinct, rudimentary 3D graphics that make it hard to tell what's in the foreground, what's above you, and what's merely in the background.

The Ascension wholly fails to rise to even a basic level of fun.

Jon is a consummate expert in adventure, action, and sports games. Which is just as well, as in real life he's timid, lazy, and unfit. It's amazing how these things even themselves out.
