Green Ninja: Year of the Frog is a game about kicking things in the face. And it's made by Nitrome, so obviously it's great.
It doesn't quite have the spark of the dev's other releases, but it continues that action-puzzler theme that runs through pretty much everything it's put out.
It's bright, it's funny, and while it's not as mechanically diverse as it could be, you'll still have a blast while you're playing it.
Hopping madThe game takes place over a series of boxed-in levels. You control the titular frog by swiping a finger left, right, up, or down on the screen.
Froggy then darts off in that direction, only stopping when it hits a wall, which it'll stick to. You need to clear a level of bad guys to continue, and you take them out by swooping into them.
As you play, the game throws new obstacles at you. There are blocks you can't grab on to, sticky blocks that you can't jump off, flamethrowers, bad guys that shoot out lasers, and gates you can only pass if you're heading in the right direction.
It's not the most original collection of challenges, and if you've played Silly Sausage, then you'll be pretty familiar with a lot of them.
That's not to say the game's retreading too heavily on Nitrome's previous work, but it's not quite as fresh as we've come to expect.
Frog's got legsBut there's enough here that you're still going to enjoy the time you spend with Green Ninja. It pops and fizzles along, throwing in new ideas just when it's in danger of slowing down, and it looks great too.
It you're a fan of Nitrome then you're going to lap this up like a frog in a puddle, but if you're looking to take your first steps into the dev's catalogue, it might be worth starting off somewhere else.
