Solo developer Chris McFarland has launched his challenging action-roguelite Tallowmere on iOS today.

This is a game that falls into the "punishing but fair" category. You should already know if that's your kind of gaming experience. If it is, clock in below to find out more.

Tallowmere has you seeing how far you can progress through Lady Tallowmere's procedurally generated dungeons. That's about it.

While the goal is simple enough, the finer details of achieving it is where the complexity is found.

These are the basics as described by McFarland:

  • Raise your shield to block enemy attacks
  • Lower your shield and strike your foes when the timing is right
  • Jump or move to avoid traps, or use your shield to reduce damage taken
  • Find the key to advance to the next room.

So it's a game of timing and perception. You'll need to concentrate. But your limits will be tested as each room is bigger and more dangerous than the last. Eventually you're bound to make a mistake.

To help you along, you can improve stats and passive abilities with the souls of those you've slain. There's also new weapons, outfits, and shields to earn.

It won't help you enough to let you make more than a few errors, mind. You can only rely on your own skill here.

If you're up to it, Tallowmere can be bought for £2.99 / $3.99 on the App Store right now.
