Beast Quest is a third person action adventure game that takes its cues from Infinity Blade and the Zelda series, and adds a good dollop of RPG fetch-questing for good measure.

It makes for a pretty entertaining experience, for the most part at least. But there are some sizeable niggles, most notably repetition, that keep it from achieving greatness.

Sword and swipery

The game is split into two parts - exploration and combat. When you're exploring you push a button in the bottom left to move forwards, and swipe a finger around the screen to change direction.

It's a great system, and it works really well, bypassing a lot of the problems of third person movement on touchscreens. There are chests to open, secrets to find, and items to collect - all by tapping on them.

When you get close to an enemy the game switches to a fixed, Infinity Blade-style perspective. You get an attack button, a block button, and two dodge buttons. Attacks are pretty well telegraphed, and there's not that much variety when it comes to scraps.

There's the odd neat idea, like having to fight multiple enemies at the same time, and the game throws in QTEs every now and then too. But once you've learned a monster's patterns, it's pretty easy to chop them up every time.

A levelling system sees you buying new upgrades to make your sword, shield, and armour stronger. You can buy healing potions with premium currency, or sleep at your camp to regain your hit points.

Beast practice

Overall the game is pretty solid, but you get the feeling it's on the verge of being spectacular, and it just misses out.

There are difficulty spikes, and the fetch quests get dull pretty quickly. When Beast Quest shines, it's brilliant. When it's at its worst, it's a bit of a slog.

Beast Quest

There's a good game here, it's just a shame it's held back from becoming a great one
