Sega is apparently going to be launching a new smartphone game called Monster Gear in Japan this May. That title is probably a pretty big giveaway as to what it's all about.

All we know at this stage, thanks to a listing here, is that it will be a "hunting action" game with four-player co-op, and five minute missions.

But, put it this way, it's no secret that Capcom's Monster Hunter games are pretty popular on iOS. So it's not too surprising that Sega might be trying to grab some of that success with Monster Gear.

What I'm saying is that it's quite likely that Monster Gear is pretty similar to Monster Hunter. So, an action-RPG that focuses on battling large monsters to get their loot.

Siliconera goes so far as to suggest it could be considered as "Monster Hunter lite." That's on account of its brief mission time and the possibility of it being played with one hand.

Given that Monster Hunter isn't available on Android, Sega may actually be on to something here if it can fill that void - it may not be Monster Hunter but it may come close.

Expect more details about Monster Gear when it drops in Japan next month. Let's also hope that it heads west too.
