There are plenty of RPGs on the App Store, but there are few with as much heart and ingenuity as Attack the Light.

It's based on a Cartoon Network show, which I've never seen, but it's a spunky, funny, genuinely interesting twist on the RPG that fits perfectly into your pocket.

Are pee gee

The game sees you controlling a team of four heroes. Three Gems - super-powered ladies with a variety of different ass-kicking abilities - and Steven, who's a bit of a drip and acts as your healer.

You travel through the world with a series of swipes, wandering from screen to screen engaging in battles, opening chests, and uncovering secrets.

The battles are turn-based, and each round you're given a set number of stars to spend on attacks and spells. These stack up, so if you don't use them all one round you'll have more the next.

You can beef up your attacks by tapping on the screen when a star appears, and the same applies when you're defending against the various beasts and baddies as well.

There's a rich vein of humour running through the game, with Steven often quipping about how the whole thing is just like an RPG.

Light it up

And it is just like an RPG. It might appear light and frothy to begin with, but once you get stuck into the rhythm of play, and start powering up your heroes, you'll find a surprisingly tactical battle system and some interesting puzzles.

Even if you're not a fan of the show, this one is well worth checking out. It's bright, breezy, full of solid ideas, and will scratch even the itchiest RPG itch.

Attack the Light

A rich and entertaining RPG with surprising depth, Attack the Light is well worth a look

Harry used to be really good at Snake on the Nokia 5110. Apparently though, digital snake wrangling isn't a proper job, so now he writes words about games instead.
