Another month, another great game from Nitrome. This one is a variation on the Snake template that sees you leading a stretchy hound through a series of fiendish levels.

It's funny, it looks great, and it's painfully addictive once you get into the bones of it. Nitrome is regularly hitting the iOS ball out of the App Store, and Silly Sausage continues that grand tradition.

A gamebook based on a Shakespeare play? Sounds a bit boring, right? Wrong. This is a fast and funny retelling of the bard's tragedy that snaps from the first page to the last.

And while it is full of chuckles, it still remains pretty loyal to the original text, as well as adding some pop-culture references to keep things relevant.

Adventures of Poco Eco - Lost Sounds

A brilliant game that sees you wandering through a gorgeous world that's made of sound. It's a puzzler at heart, although you'll rarely be scratching your head.

But there's still a wonderful feeling of exploration here, and while it might only take you a couple of hours to polish it off, it'll be a couple of hours well spent.

Sid Meier's Starships

A huge, meaty lump of a deep-space strategy game that some might find daunting. It's worth sticking with though, because there are some great ideas on display here.

There are battles to fight, peace treaties to negotiate, and wonders to find. And it all looks really rather special.

Jump'N'Shoot Attack

It might have a pretty terrible name, but this is a surprisingly engaging two-touch retro style platformer that's tough as old boots.

There are jet pack sections, weapon power-ups, and all manner of alien beasties to blast into pixels. And the challenge is set to just the right side of addictive.

The Trace: Murder Mystery Game
By Relentless Software - buy on iPad and iPhone

A mystery puzzler that sees you trying to fathom out a series of fiendish crimes. There's lots of poking, swiping, and tapping to be done here.

And it's all really rather pleasing. The puzzles are never super hard, and it gets a bit hidden object sometimes, but it's still well worth a look.

SwapQuest

A clever re-working of the retro RPG that sees you building yourself a path. There are monsters to whomp, chests to open, and bosses to fight.

It's all presented in cute 16-bit graphics, and there's an underlying puzzling aspect that makes this a lot tougher than you might expect.

TouchTone
By Mikengreg - buy on iPad and iPhone

A puzzler that's all about reconnecting lines of communication, with a darker theme that runs underneath it, TouchTone is a challenging experience.

There are some pretty tough levels here, and while it's a tad linear, it's still a brilliant exploration of some often uncomfortable ideas.

Four Letters
By PikPok - buy on iPad and iPhone

A brilliantly simple word puzzler that sees you trying to make as many four letter words as you can before a timer runs out.

Once you get on a roll it's surprisingly addictive, and trying to beat your highscore becomes a compulsion pretty quickly.

Card Crawl
By Tiny Touch Tales - buy on iPad and iPhone

A smart card game that's essentially a dungeon crawler distilled into a simplified take on patience. Draw cards, whomp monsters, try not to die.

You need to grab gold as well, and trying to get to the end of the pack of cards with the highest score is a pretty tough ask.
