Paper Dungeons reminds us of the nerdy pen, paper and dice heritage of the roguelike genre that remains so popular on mobile.

It plays a familiar game of dungeon crawling, with random top-down exploration, turn-based battles, and inventory management.

But this particular RPG shows its workings, with a visual representation of dice being rolled as you engage in virtual fisticuffs with an armoured skeleton or a giant spider.

Rather annoyingly, the main campaign sees you starting from scratch at the start of each level, but you soon unlock Rogue mode for that proper, consistent, randomised roguelike experience.

While Paper Dungeons is perhaps a little too rough and ready, its DIY philosophy - seen in its visuals and in its dungeon creation and sharing tools - will be difficult to resist for old school dice rollers.
