Ultra popular Japanese smartphone game Puzzle & Dragons is about collecting, training, and battling cute elemental monsters. So you'd think that it would make a perfect Pokemon spin-off game, right?

Well you're wrong, according to Nintendo, who will instead be loaning its cast of Mario characters to GungHo for the upcoming 3DS game, Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition.

The game has Mario running dungeons and completing quests, and will be able to collect classic Mario monsters like Koopa Troopas, Boos, and Goombas to round out his party.

This isn't the first time this mobile game ended up on 3DS. Puzzle & Dragons Z hit the console in 2013 and has shifted more than a million copies. It's also far from the first crossover: GungHo has previously featured characters from Clash of Clans, Monster Hunter, Batman, Angry Birds, and even Hello Kitty.

This Mario version of the game will hit Japanese stores on April 29th. No word yet on whether we'll ever get to play it in English.
