Luna League Soccer feels like a throwback to the days of cover mounted floppy disks and games that didn't take themselves too seriously.

It's arcade football through and through, dripping with silly ideas - some of which work, some of which don't, and some of which seem to have no effect on the gameplay whatsoever.

But there's a reasonably meaty, eminently simple kick-about here, and while it won't sate the lust of those longing for a real football game on iOS, it's still got enough going for it that it's worth a look.

Literally hoof it

You pick a team of supernaturally enabled players and then engage in brief, vaguely silly games of 6-a-side football.

Everything is controlled with a floating joystick and a single button. Your actions are context based. If you've not got the ball tapping the button performs sliding tackles or swaps players, if you do it makes you pass or shoot.

It's not the perfect system, but the quick fire bounce of play means you're usually just mashing the button and hoping for the best. It makes for an entertaining enough diversion, but there's little in the way of tactics.

Different teams have different special moves, ranging from a teleportation shot to a special kick that turns the ball to ice and freezes nearby players. These are triggered automatically when your meter is full.

As you play you level up, unlocking new teams with different special moves, and new types of balls that mix up the way the game plays.

Magic balls

There's not a whole heap to do here, but it's fun enough that in little bursts it'll keep you playing for twenty minutes or so.

Luna League Soccer isn't the most polished game out there, and it isn't the sharpest either, but it crackles with energy when it needs to, and plays smoothly enough that you won't begrudge it the odd misstep.

Harry used to be really good at Snake on the Nokia 5110. Apparently though, digital snake wrangling isn't a proper job, so now he writes words about games instead.
