[Update] Apple unveils large screen iPhone 6, and even larger screened iPhone 6 Plus

iPhone 6

Apple has announced not one, but two smartphones at its keynote today: the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

The iPhone 6 has a 4.7 inch display, making it larger than the iPhone 5. It has a resolution of 1334 by 750, with 326 pixels per inch.

And it's slimmer than the current fleet of iPhone, at 6.9 mm to the 7.6 mm iPhone 5S.

The iPhone 6S Plus, on the other hand, has a 5.5 inch display, making it Apple's entry into the world of phablets. It has a resolution of 1920 by 1080 with 401 pixels per inch. And it's only 7.2 mm thick.

Landscape

Plus, some apps have special landscape views so mail can show your inbox and messages at once, for example. There's also a horizontal homescreen, and a horizontal keyboard with extra buttons like copy and paste.

Both devices have a continuous, seamless design with no distinct edges. And both are powered by a new Apple A8 chip which apparently has 25 percent faster processing power and 50 percent faster graphics than the A7.

It's also more energy efficient, so you hopefully won't see your battery life die when playing intensive 3D games. Apple says the iPhone 6 will last for 11 hours when playing video (to 10 hours on iPhone 5), while the 6 Plus will get 14 hours.

These devices also carry an M8 coprocessor to continuously measure motion data, and a barometer to sense air pressure in relation to elevation for fitness apps. Maybe some creative indie devs could make a game around that.

The new iPhone 6 range phones also come with 8 megapixel iSight camera, with an all-new sensor and lots of other fancy stats that mean your holiday snaps will look nicer.

Horse

Here is a photo of a woman on a horse. Which is relevant because it was shot with an iPhone 6.

The camera's also better at detecting faces, has new image stabilisation tech, works better in low light, and captures slow mo video at 240 frames per second.

iPhone 6 price

The iPhone 6 comes in gold, silver, and space gray like the iPhone 5S. And you can get dashing silicone cases in six colours. It starts at $199 for a 16GB phone on a two-year contract.

iPhone 6 Plus

The iPhone 6 Plus comes in the same colours, and starts at $299 for 16GB with a two-year contract.

Pre-orders start September 12th (on Friday), and they'll be available in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Japan on September 19th (next week).
