Goblin Sword is exactly what you want from a retro game-inspired action platformer. It has the pixel art and simplicity, but none of the janky controls.

It starts without taking a breath: an evil wizard is conjuring up monsters so you're told to kill them and then him. You can push the story aside from then on.

It's all jumping over pits, discovering secrets behind false walls, and slaying bipedal pigs with boomerangs after that.

The virtual buttons really shine in Goblin Sword. They're spaced apart just right, and are large enough so that you don't miss them. Even if you don't like them, they're customisation so you should have no quarrels.

Goblin Sword also has light RPG elements to spice things up, if only a little. This mainly involves spending the coins you collect across the 48 levels (and three secret "very hard" levels) on new gear and bigger swords.

There are also magical relics that you can find that grant you temporary powers, too. One I found threw my sword in front of my when slashed.

On top of that, there are four guardians you can employ to help you out. You can also bring back souvenirs from your travels to decorate your home with, if you wish.

Goblin Sword

Goblin Sword is a very familiar experience then, overall. Nothing new, but it doesn't need to be. Just having tight controls and levels worth exploring is enough to put it among the best action platformers on iOS.

Goblin Sword is coming out for iOS on September 11th. It will be on a half price sale at 69p / 99c for a limited time at its launch.

There's more information about the game on its website.
