Remember Frogger? Crossy Road is just like that classic arcade game, except its creators call it a "froguelike".

There aren't many roguelike features in Crossy Road, admittedly. But you can see where studio Hipster Whale is coming from.

You tap to make your frog hop forward endlessly across busy roads and logs flowing down rivers. Each of these environments are randomly generated as you proceed, so that's one roguelike element to check off.

The other is permadeath which, well, is found in most arcade games, to be fair. Nevertheless, it'll have you cursing as you get splatted by a truck and just miss out on a new high score.

Your score is increased by hopping forward, but you can also pick up coins by swiping sideways to get to them.

My favourite feature of Crossy Road are the different character options. There are frogs, goats, zombies, unicorns, capybaras, dogs, and wizards.

The pigeon is probably the best one. It, er, drops little white pixels behind it on the ground, and makes a lot of rude sounds. Yes, it's a fart joke.

Crossy Road a fun little game; a worthy rehash of Frogger, I'd say. It should be coming to iOS by the end of September.

Hipster Whale hopes to bring it to as many other platforms as possible, too.

It'll be free to play but Hipster Whale says it will be "fair and ethical", stating that there will be "a max cap players can pay in real money."

You can keep an eye on Crossy Road's progress on its website.
