The Outcast is a passive adventure that may interest fans of Mountain

The Outcast is a survival adventure game for those of you who are too busy to play games.

If that's you, and you're still after the joy games can bring, this is a potential solution. The Outcast has 'passive play', which means you can play it in the background while doing other activities.

In that regard, it works in the same way as Mountain. Yep, you could even argue that there are "no controls" in The Outcast, too.

Anyway, The Outcast takes you on a journey one day at a time. Every day that passes in the game sees another event occur. You'll be notified of when an event happens through notifications.

The events I've seen so far involve cutting up animals for meat, refilling water bottles at lakes, and being beaten up by villagers.

Each day that passes costs you some water and food. Eventually, it seems that you'll run out of these resources and inevitably die.

The Outcast

Given the hostility of this world, starvation and thirst are the more privileged ways of dying. The vibe I get from the game makes it seem quite possible that death can come from other people and wild beasts, too.

That's part of the excitement: you never know what's going to happen to you. Having to wait to find out helps build tension. It means you'll be eager for the surprise waiting for you when next checking your phone.

What's unusual about The Outcast is that you can't affect the outcome of the journey. You simply wait for time to pass to find out what happens to you. It seems that good luck is the only thing you can hope for.

Unfortunately, as the game is still in development, the random events you're given don't feel entirely cohesive yet. It really does feel random, and some of the events don't marry up at all.

That will be improved over time as more players give feedback for the developers to use.

So, if you're interested, The Outcast can be purchased on the App Store for £1.49 / $1.99 right now.
