Endless runners - even endless skaters - are difficult to get excited about no matter how "epic" they may claim to be. That doesn't mean they're all a waste of time, though.

Epic Skater might not quite live up to the name, but this cartoony trickfest / severe injury simulator is still rather difficult to put down.

Skate or try

Controlling your oddly-skilled-for-his-age schoolboy is a simple matter of tapping and swiping.

Tap the screen to make him jump ("ollie"), tap and hold to increase the height of the jump, and swipe while in the air to do tricks. You unlock spinning and manuals as you progress as well but things never gets all that complicated.

Of course if you fail to land a trick properly (i.e. spin and land sideways, hit the pavement before finishing a kickflip, etc), or if you crash into something, you're going to wipe out. And the ragdoll physics make things look suitably painful.

Once you've bailed you can spend an Energy Drink to continue close to where you left off, but honestly it's just as much fun to simply start over. Plus those energy drinks aren't easy to come by so you'll want to hang on to them when you can.

Get tricky

At any given point you'll have up to three missions to complete in order to earn bonus experience (to gain levels and unlock new tricks) and coins (to upgrade your skater). They're nothing spectacular, but they do give you something to strive for rather than simply trying to snap up all the coins you can.

It might take a little while to ramp-up, but once you start to unlock new tricks Epic Skater really begins to shine.

Chaining tricks together with grinds and linking runs with manuals is quite satisfying, and it's nice to be able to use the coins earned along the way to improve stats like trick duration or spin stability.

Those first few tries in Epic Skater might not stand out particularly well but stick with it. It won't be long before you're grinding on rooftops and speeding through sewers while chanting the “one more time” mantra.

Epic Skater

Epic Skater really isn't all that epic, but it's certainly quite a bit of fun
