Sharknado: The Video Game will splash onto iOS in anticipation of film's sequel

The 2013 made-for-television B-movie Sharknado is getting its own video game.

According to Syfy VP Jeff Li, Sharknado: The Video Game will launch for iOS sometime before the film's sequel, Sharknado 2: The Second One, which premieres on the Syfy channel July 30th.

It is being developed by Other Ocean Interactive, who has previously worked on Ultimate Mortal Kombat for the Nintendo DS and NBA Rush for iOS.

An infinite runner, Sharknado: The Video Game will follow in the film's campy footsteps, with players fending off shark-filled tornados from the streets of New York City (in the first movie, it was Los Angeles.)

Since its debut last July, Sharknado has gained a cult following for its outrageous, B-movie aesthetic and deliberately ridiculous plot, which many Syfy original films have become known for.

With over 45 licenses for Sharknado products and plans to extend the franchise into what Li described to The Hollywood Reporter as a "transmedia property," a Sharknado game was only a matter of time.

If the mobile game is a success, plans for a separate and more complex console game will be considered.

Syfy is still working out pricing with the game's publisher, Majesco Entertainment. Free-to-play models have been discussed, but nothing is conclusive yet.

In lieu of game footage, check out the very bad trailer for Syfy's upcoming Sharknado 2: The Second One below.
