Coming this week: What to expect at WWDC 2014 special
|

Every Monday, we kick off the week by alerting you to a handful of upcoming mobile games. This week, though, we could barely find any.

That's probably because mobile game developers don't want to see their games get lost amid the chaos that is Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

This yearly event is The Big A's giant pow-wow for app and software makers in California's Moscone Center.

So, we'll dedicate most of this edition of 'Coming this week' to predictions and expectations for Apple's announcements for WWDC 2014.

WWDC 2014

Apple always kicks off WWDC with a keynote. Here, Tim Cook and co. announce new initiatives, software, platforms, and - occasionally - hardware.

We are guaranteed to get our first glance at iOS 8 - journalists hanging around the Moscone Center have already seen big banners with a big number '8' emblazoned on 'em.

This iOS update will not be a massive overhaul like iOS 7, so you shouldn't expect much more than some handy new features and tweaks.

But rumours suggest we will see some new Apple-made apps (either built-in or on the App Store).

That includes Healthbook, a fitness hub that measures everything from your heart rate to your blood sugar level and your respiratory rate; mobile versions of OS X's TextEdit and Preview; and a Tips app that provides help for new users.

Apple doesn't typically unveil major mobile hardware at WWDC any more, so don't get your hopes up about seeing a new iPhone, iPad, or that oft-rumoured smartwatch later today.

The Apple keynote kicks off at 10am in California (That's 6pm BST).

iOS and Android Tales of the Adventure Company

Okay, onto some games...

Remember that darling game that turned Disco Zoo into a roguelike? Tales of the Adventure Company makes the leap from Android to iOS on Thursday.

And nutso-hard, gravity-flipping retro platformer VVVVVV could hit the App Store very soon, as Terry Cavanagh submitted his much-loved 3DS game to Apple last week.

PS Vita 1001 Spikes

1001 Spikes is a super-difficult platformer and an enhanced remake of the Xbox Live Indie Game Aban Hawkins & the 1000 Spikes. Nicalis is releasing this cult classic on Vita in the US this week, and hopes to have it out in Europe in the summer.

NIS America will launch bonkers pop idol simulator Hyperdimension Neptunia PP on Vita in North America on June 3rd, and in Europe on June 6th.

Those same release dates apply to PlayStation Vita Pets. This is probably a lot like Hyperdimension Neptunia, only with tiny dogs instead of CPU pop starlets trapped inside a parallel universe called Gamindustri.

Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate crams the previously PS3- and PC-only games PixelJunk Shooter 1 and 2 into a seamless campaign for Vita. Both games are about manipulating liquids to save trapped scientists. It should be out everywhere this week.

Nintendo 3DS

3DS owners will also be able to play 1001 Spikes this week.

But at the polar opposite end of that spectrum is quirky lifestyle sim Tomodachi Life. This uses the Mii characters on your 3DS to generate a bizarre soap opera. I have no idea. It's out worldwide this week.

Plus, the European eShop will be stocking a download version of Farming Simulator 14. Oh, and NES sports classic Super Dodge Ball will hit the 3DS Virtual Console.
