Super Smash Bros. shows off its 3DS touchscreen controls

E3 is coming up fast, which means there should (hopefully) be a glut of new information on the upcoming 3DS release of Super Smash Bros.

Until such a time as that glut arrives, however, there is a nifty nugget of information to report courtesy of our friends over at Nintendo Life.

Director Masahiro Sakurai took to the Miiverse to show off how the 3DS's bottom screen will factor into Super Smash Bros. play.

Basically, it'll show you the accumulated damage that each character's taken in a given bout which allows you to target the ones who are likely to go down quickly.

What's more, you can specifically target those beaten-down brawlers by simply tapping on their picture on the bottom screen.

It's not the most revolutionary Super Smash Bros. announcement we've ever heard, but it's an interesting - if perhaps unsurprising - integration of the 3DS's touchscreen all the same.

We'll be interested to see if and how the dual screens will factor into cinematics, but we suppose we'll have to wait until "this summer" to find out when the game releases.

Or - y'know - we can report on what Nintendo shows off during the Super Smash Bros. roundtable at E3 that we'll be attending for you.

Yeah, let's do that instead.
