Tales of the Adventure Company is a puzzle-RPG that mixes Disco Zoo with dungeon-crawling

Slothwerks has been busy recently. Busy enhancing and balancing its 7DRL creation Tales of the Adventure Company (TotAC) for mobile, that is.

It's been worth the hassle, too. TotAC has all the necessary ingredients of a puzzle-RPG you can play for a few minutes or for a couple of hours.

It tasks you with moving through seven floors of a dungeon to defeat the boss at the end in 100 moves or less. It ain't easy.

Animal magic

Strangely, the game most comparable to this one is the animal-finding mini-game of Disco Zoo... with an RPG twist.

Each floor of the dungeon is a set of tiles. You tap on them to explore that tile, revealing what is hidden underneath it (if anything).

More than likely, it's going to be a monster. And like the animals in Disco Zoo, the monsters here are laid out in specific formations across the tiles.

Finding one means you can probably guess where the other monsters of that type are. This is handy if you want to avoid them, as they take some of your party leader's health when discovered.

However, you want to find these monsters, as one of them holds the key that enables you to gain access to the next floor. Unfortunately, you don't know which one it is.

So, you do have to fight them and beat them to progress. If party members die, they're gone forever. Luckily, you can rescue heroes to replace them by revealing their formations in the tiles.

There are a lot of conflicts in TotAC, and it's these conflicts that make it feel like a tough puzzle.

Tales of the Adventure Company

Bonfires restore your party's health, but at the cost of 10 turns. The different types of heroes offer bonuses if they're the party leader, but that means they'll take the brunt of the damage.

Luckily, by playing the game more, you unlock elements that make the game a little easier on re-playing it. Such as having an extra hero upon starting, for example.

Tales of the Adventure Company is currently available from the Windows Phone Store [buy] for £1.49 / $1.99.

It'll have the same price tag around it when it surfaces on Android on May 29th and on iOS on June 5th.

You can also play a web version of the game for free on Game Jolt.
