The long-awaited sequel to 2011's strategy RPG Battleheart is almost here.

Mika Mobile says Battleheart Legacy has been sent to Apple for approval, and this 3D follow-up should hit the App Store next week. It will cost £2.99 / $4.99, and won't feature any in-app purchases.

If you're wondering why it's not called Battleheart 2, Mika says: "It carries Battleheart's DNA, but it isn't just Battleheart refreshed with a couple tweaks and some new graphics."

Where the first game was just about party-based combat, Legacy is a vast, non-linear RPG, "more focused on exploration and storytelling than simply levelling-up for the sake of levelling-up".

The controls have been changed because the levels are now large 3D battlefields rather than static arenas. But the smart combat, which combines assessing threats and utilising the right skills, should be familiar.

Another big change is the fact that you control one hero, rather than an entire party. However, that one customisable protagonist can master any of the game's 12 classes, and can mix and match abilities among them.

We liked the first game. We said that "Battleheart's thrilling concoction of strategy and role-playing will prove spellbinding to any iPhone gamer looking for a quality fantasy action title."

We can't wait to see if this sequel was worth the two and a half-year wait. We'll know more next week (hopefully).
