Out at midnight: 4444 may look simple but it proves to be an intense puzzler

4444 doesn't get off to a great start. Within minutes of playing it, though, you'll probably change your mind about it.

This action-puzzler is as simple as it looks. Your goal is to turn the entire screen into a single colour. But doing that gets increasingly more tricky.

For a start, the screen is split into four squares. Inside those are usually even-smaller squares of different colours.

You tap squares to replace them with the next one in your queue. The problem is that your line-up of squares doesn't always contain the ones you want.

Sometimes, they'll be wild cards that require you to guess their colour. Other times, you'll have a rainbow square that constantly changes colour, meaning you'll have to time your tap right.

Lightning squares split the other squares up into even-smaller ones. Spiders will also have the same effect as they force their way through your squares.

Upping the ante is the need to solve the level as fast as possible to unlock all three stars. If you're slow but solve the puzzle, you'll only get one star. If you run out of turns, then you'll get none.

4444 is a deceptive puzzle game, then. It doesn't look like much, but it does soon turn that right around.

You'll be able to purchase 4444 from the UK and US App Stores at midnight for £1.49 / $1.99.
