CastleStorm made quite an impression when it was launched over the walls of PG towers and onto our PS Vitas last year.

Now developer Zen Studios has targeted our iPhones, iPads, and Android devices as well.

We're not particularly minded to put up much resistance to this relentless assault, to be honest. We loved the game on PS Vita to the tune of a Silver Award, and having had a quick bash with the early stages of the iPhone version, it seems to have retained its charm.

CastleStorm - Free to Siege is a castle vs castle strategy game that puts us in mind of Swords and Soldiers in the way that you can recruit and send out troops onto a 2D battlefield.

But there's also a gleefully destructive element here that sees you bombarding opposing troops directly with arrows and other spiky heavy things. You can even turn your siege equipment directly onto the opposing castle itself, which evokes nothing less than Angry Birds with its topple-down physics.

It's also possible to send your chisel-jawed hero out into the field for some hands-on hack-and-slash retribution.

Throwing everything but the kitchen sink

Basically, CastleStorm - Free to Siege does a lot of different things, and it appears to do them well. Whether touch-driven devices can contain all of these complex actions through a full campaign, well, you'll have to wait until our review to find out.

We'll also be interested to find out precisely how that new freemium model affects the balance of a game that had it pretty much sorted in its original premium guise. You'll be unsurprised to learn that there are two virtual currencies involved here, as well as ads that can be dismissed with a one-off purchase.

The game shouldn't lack for depth at any rate, with four campaigns featuring 150 battles included.

One thing that has also made the jump is the original's Castle Editor, which allows you to build a castle from scratch.

CastleStorm - Free to Siege is available right now for iPhone, iPad, and Android. It's free to download.
