Mortar - Clash of Clans Complete Guide to Defenses

| Clash of Clans

The Big Daddy of your defensive guard can pack a massive punch - and reach attacking units before other Defenses have even woken up - but its Sloth-like nature and inability to fight at close quarters mean it needs careful placement, as well as support from fellow units.

Range: 4-11 tiles
Attack Speed: 5s
Damage Type: Area splash (1.5 tiles)
Targets: Ground
Size Requirement: 3x3 tiles

Defensive tactics

The range of the Mortar is so vast that it makes sense to place near the center of your village for maximum coverage, while ensuring it's surrounded by other units to keep invading troops away from its 4-tile inactive radius ('blind spot).

It is particularly effective against groups of ground troops, such as Archers, often able to dispose of them with just one shot. Keep it within range of Cannons and Archer Towers to maximize its survival.

Level Damage Per Second Hit Points Upgrade Cost Upgrade Time Town Hall Level Required Build Number Allowed
1 4 400 8000 8h 3 1
2 5 450 32,000 12h 4 1
3 6 500 120,000 1d 5 1
4 7 550 400,000 2d 6 2
5 8 590 800,000 4d 7 3
6 9 610 1,600,000 5d 8 3
7 11 640 3,200,000 7d 9 3
8 13 670 6,400,000 10d 10 3

Offensive tactics

While powerful, the Mortar isn't the most resistant defensive unit, meaning it can be destroyed relatively quickly with the right approach.

Faster units such as Barbarians can move in reasonably unscathed due to their speed in relation to the Mortar's slow rate of fire (at which point the Mortar is defenceless due to its 4-tile blind spot).

As with Cannons, it is also susceptible to air unit attacks (and its low hit points ensure a speedy kill).
