The upgrade time and cost soon ramp up to reflect the essential role these units play in your village, however. But you get what you pay/wait for.

Defensive tactics
Archer Towers are the cornerstone of your defensive strategy - literally.
Place them towards the outermost edges of your village, where their range can cover units both on the outside and inside of the your Walls. Spread their placement evenly to ensure maximum defensive coverage, while ensuring ground-based defenses such as Cannons are also able to provide protection in return.

Offensive tactics
Like Cannons, Archer Towers have a one-track mind, only able to attack a single target at a time.
It's therefore easy to overrun them with mob-like attacks featuring large numbers of Barbarians and / or Archers. Air attacks should be limited to Dragons, as Archer Towers deal with Balloons relatively quickly - unless the latter are used in large numbers (a costly but effective way to destroy Archer Towers).
