One of Google's April Fools' Day gags this year is a thing of great beauty. Mainly because it's the sort of thing you desperately want to be true, only to be crushed when you check the calendar and realise the cruel truth of the matter.

At the centre of this beautifully pitched in-joke is a Google Maps-powered Pokemon hunt, with added augmented reality spice when you manage to get to one of the geocached beasts at the locations marked on the map.

In the trailer for the hunt, which you can check out above, people go scrambling up mountain faces, racing through the savannah, and tossing out lines in the middle of the ocean to try to catch some water-based critters.

My personal favourite moment is the giant Onix rumbling through the centre of a city as bemused onlookers watch a man fumble with his Nexus 5 in an attempt to catch it.

And it's all lies. So, now I'm sad.
