Tanks are the height of cool now. There was a time when people would point and laugh at you if you drove a tank around.

Not any more, though. Now, you see, these armoured rolling weapons command the utmost respect.

That's in part thanks to Wargaming's tank-based MMO World of Tanks. And now a select band of mobile gamers are going to get the chance to experience the thrill of tank combat for themselves.

World of Tanks Blitz is the smartphone and tablet version of the action-focused multiplayer game. As of, well, very recently, it's gone into closed beta, so you can sign up to test the game by clicking right here.

While the game will be available on both Android and iOS, by the way, the closed beta testing is for iOS gamers only at the moment. Sorry, Google gamers. We feel your pain.

The game itself boasts 7-on-7 PvP and more than 100 tanks. Blitz is essentially a distillation of the fast-paced combat of the PC version for a more mobile-friendly audience.

There are three different classes of tank from which to pick, and each of the "tank-building superpowers" is represented in the game. That does mean there might be some 'real enemies' in the game, though, and Apple isn't into that at all.

When it surfaces on smartphones and tablets, World of Tanks Blitz will be free-to-play, much like its PC-based bigger brother. We're not quite sure what shape that free-to-play-ness will take, mind.

We'll let you know when we get any more information about World of Tanks Blitz. We'll also probably make loads of tank puns. Because, yes, those are fun.

In the meantime, you can check out the screenshots for World of Tanks Blitz in the gallery at the top of this page.
