That's a meaty mouthful

'UHR-Warlords' isn't the catchiest name for a game.

I mean, it sounds a bit like an exclamation of distaste at the subject matter of this neat mix of turn-based strategy and card game.

But don't be put off by a silly thing like that. That's because there's a pretty competent scrapper bubbling under the fantasy frippery here.

In this clever blend of chess, tower defence, and Magic: The Gathering, you are cast as a warlord out to smash the face of other warlords. There are probably reasons for your animosity. If you want to invent your own, though, that's fine.

You've got a deck of cards with which to play and a bunch of strongholds to defend. Your deck is full of monsters and magic spells, so you'll need to learn how to use them if you want to succeed.

Of course, you'll have to possess lots of special magical energy to use your warriors, assassins, and wizards. You have a set pool to use each turn, but you can add to it by taking over squares on the grid-based map that glow purple.

There's online multiplayer, pass-the-handset multiplayer, a single-player campaign, and lots of other exciting giant-stabbing content for you to strategise your way around here.

UHR-Warlords is out on the App Store for iPad right now, and will cost you £4.99 / $6.99.
