While the newly released freebie Droid Arcade may look exactly the same as Droidscape: Basilica, it actually has faster-paced arcade-style gameplay. Which I prefer.

The basic elements of Droid Arcade are the same as the ones in Droidscape: Basilica. So, you're still manoeuvring the little droid, Bishop 7, through the deadly innards of the Basilica space station to save the last of the Chronomancers.

Levels still involve your dodging patrolling enemies, collecting gems for bonuses, and collecting keys to open doors to get to the exit.

The main difference between the two games, however, is that you don't draw out a path for Bishop 7 first in this new title. Now, you just guide Bishop 7 around the level with your finger. He will follow directly behind.

By making this change, the dev speeds the game up. Droid Arcade is less a puzzle game, then, and more a straight action-arcade title. The energy system remains, mind, so you do still have to plan your movements. This time around, though, you can do it on the fly.

To be honest, Droid Arcade makes Droidscape: Basilica feel rather clunky in comparison.

It's worth checking out Droid Arcade, especially as it's free, so go ahead and grab it from the App Store now.
