Nintendo has updated the 3DS with a bevy of new features designed to bring your portable Nintendo experience more in line with your console at home.

The major new addition is the Miiverse app. It's basically a social network for Nintendo gamers. So, you can share screenshots and images, and wander around as a bobble-headed version of yourself.

You bring the app up by pressing the home button when you're playing a game, then tapping on the Miiverse icon. This will take you to the game's community, where you can share and doodle to your heart's content.

The other big addition comes in the form of the unified Network ID. Where before you couldn't swap funds between 3DS and Wii U, now you can by unifying your Network ID. That sounds like fun.

There's a decent tutorial to walk you through linking your accounts together, so it shouldn't be too much hassle. And it's good to see Nintendo finally trying to get a hold on its messy online systems.

There are some other tweaks and fixes included in the update, too, including removing the limit on system transfers. All in all, it's a pretty hefty winter update that's pushing the 3DS family in the right direction.

Harry used to be really good at Snake on the Nokia 5110. Apparently though, digital snake wrangling isn't a proper job, so now he writes words about games instead.
