Klaus-Jürgen Wrede's Carcassonne was one of the first strategy board games to make the leap to mobile, and now it's going on its first sale to celebrate an upcoming expansion.

For a limited time, Carcassonne is available for $6.99 / £4.99 which is a nice change from its normal $9.99 / £6.99 price.

The reason for the sale is to celebrate the upcoming 'The Dragon and the Princess' expansion, which will be available starting the week before Christmas as an in-app purchase.

Dragon rage

As the name of the expansion implies, it'll introduce a host of new features like Dragons and Princesses to the board.

When a tile with a volcano is placed, the Dragon swoops in to nest on the volatile terrain. If a player then places a card with a Dragon symbol on it, the Dragon will rampage through the landscape devouring all meeple in its way.

The Princess is, thankfully, a less calamitous addition to Carcassonne. If a tile with a Princess is added to a city, that city's controlling player must send a meeple knight away. Assumedly, on a quest or some other chivalrous errand.

Magic Portals and Fairies also factor into The Dragon and the Princess expansion, the full details of which can be found here.

TheCodingMonkeys have announced that the new expansion will cost $1.99 / £1.49 when it launches.
