10 best Android games this week - Ridiculous Fishing, Swordigo

Every Friday, Pocket Gamer offers hands-on impressions of the week's best new Android games.

What's that, Android fans? You thought we'd forgotten about you?

No, of course not. While it's true that, yes, we have typically only devoted our new release round-ups to the world of iOS, we never forgot about the Android-owning readers of PG.

From this week, then, we'll also be picking out the best Android games of the week to give you a quick overview of all the new titles that hit Google Play in the last seven days.

Think we've missed a top 'droid game? Shout at us in the comments section down below.

This week's top pick

Ridiculous Fishing
By Vlambeer - buy on Android (£1.99 / $2.99)

Ridiculous Fishing

Ultra-addictive indie angling game Ridiculous Fishing splashed into Android waters this week - first in the Humble Mobile Bundle, then on Google Play.

Each fishing trip is broken down into three parts: you first dunk your line as deep as possible by avoiding fish. Then, on the way back up, you try to snag as many critters as possible. Finally, you throw your catch into the air and blast it to bits with high-powered weapons.

Ridiculous Fishing has a compulsive upgrade cycle, a terrific angular art style, and a whole bunch of secrets to uncover. If you haven't got an iOS device, make sure you find out what you've been missing out on straightaway.

Also out this week…

Farming Simulator 14
By Giants Software - buy on Android (£1.99 / $2.99)

Farming Sim 14

Forget FIFA - this barmy European agriculture game is the new annual franchise to watch. This year, the slow-moving world of crop collection is enhanced with more real-world farming machines and online multiplayer. Who wants to join my clan?

Flick Kick Football Legends
By PikPok - buy on Android (Free)

Flick Kick Football Legends

Potentially the best Flick Kick game yet. In Football Legends, you attempt a series of lightning-quick swipe-driven mini-games where you pass, shoot, and intercept the ball. It's all presented in a great cel-shaded style with mutton chops, mullets, and moustaches galore.

A dreaded energy system could mean the red card for this F2P app, however.

An Alien with a Magnet
By Rejected Games - buy on Android (Free)

An Alien with a Magnet

A cute magnetic platformer set in the vast expanse of space. We gave the iOS edition a Gold Award, and said that "simple controls disguise an incredibly engaging and challenging adventure. An Alien with a Magnet is a near-faultless mobile release."

Swordigo
By Touch Foo - buy on Android (Pay what you want)

Swordigo

We were also witness to the Android debut of side-scrolling role-playing game Swordigo in the most recent Humble Mobile Bundle. Of the iOS version, we said: "A likeable tribute to a genre now sadly out of vogue, Swordigo provides a welcome helping of enjoyable action-RPG brilliance."

Re-Volt 2
By WeGo Interactive - buy on Android (Free)

Re-Volt 2

Not long ago, spunky remote-controlled racer Re-Volt made the leap from Dreamcast to Android. Now, it's got a sequel with more cars, a new interface, and some revamped tracks. We haven't played it, but the reviews seem positive (though, watch out for in-app purchases and adverts).

Injustice: Gods Among Us
By Warner Bros. - buy on Android (Free)

Injustice Gods Among Us

We weren't bowled over by free-to-play card-collecting superhero brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us. On iOS, we called it "a repetitive fighter with minimal skill requirements", but noted that there are bonuses on offer here for the console game, and the graphics are insane. Worth a look for comic book superfans.

Hay Day
By Supercell - buy on Android (Free)

Hay Day

Before there was Clash of Clans, there was cute free-to-play farming sim Hay Day. You'll be growing crops, rearing cattle, and catching fish here. And while "it might be just another freemium time sink," reviewer man Harry says, "Hay Day does everything right".

Soul Calibur
By Namco - buy on Android (£4.14 / $6.67)

Soul Calibur

Arcade and Dreamcast fantasy fighter Soul Calibur landed on Android this week. In our review of the iOS version, we said that "Soul Calibur is a fantastic fighting game, which is harder to recommend than it should be thanks to the omission of any multiplayer modes." It's cheap for two weeks if you fancy it.

Avengers Alliance
By Marvel - buy on Android (Free)

Avengers Alliance

There are no shortage of Avengers tie-ins, including a knockabout Infinity Blade knock-off and a Puzzle Quest reskin. This one's like a 16-bit JRPG but with PvP online battles and the usual host of free-to-play gubbins. Another one for comic book nuts to check out.
