[Updated: It's since been confirmed that Oculus Rift is coming to Android first, as planned.]

One of the first things legendary game designer John Carmack started focusing on after becoming Oculus VR CTO in the summer was an Oculus Rift SDK for mobile platforms.

This would mean that Oculus VR's upcoming virtual reality gaming headset could be played with your Android and iPhone device.

At GamesBeat 2013 today, Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe officially confirmed that an iOS version of the Oculus Rift is in development.

Iribe also stated that the plan is to release the mobile Oculus Rift version at the same time as the PC version.

On the subject of Oculus Rift for Android, however, it's bad news for 'droid fans. According to VentureBeat, an Android version is "problematic because Google didn't design its mobile OS to work with virtual reality".

"We have some exciting plans on the mobile VR side as [well as on] the PC VR side," Iribe told VentureBeat.

"We're really looking at hitting the consumer market. We're very excited about what we're seeing. Sceptical about how good mobile VR could be on such a small platform? It's pretty incredible what he's [Carmack] been able to do," Iribe said.

The mobile version of the Oculus Rift will be lighter than its PC-centric counterpart. Oh, and it will make use of the mobile device's processor.
