Out at midnight: Make like Rogue Squadron in space shooter Strike Wing: Raptor Rising

Crescent Moon Games is all set to publish a gorgeous-looking 3D space combat game, Strike Wing: Raptor Rising, for iPhone and iPad.

Developed by Dream Builder Studios, the game appears to be a simple case of jumping into the cockpit of a star fighter and flying around a series of roomy inter-stellar arenas, blasting rivals out of the sky.

You can choose between accelerometer and virtual joystick controls from the off, and you'll need to make full use of either as attacks can come from any angle.

Having taken the game for a quick spin, it reminds us of classic arcadey space combat games such as Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. Closer to home, it plays and looks a bit like a faster and more action-oriented Galaxy on Fire.

The graphics are every bit as majestic as that makes them sound, with swirling galaxies and sharply rendered planets helping to orientate you as you spin and manoeuvre your nippy fighter.

Apparently, missions will adapt to your style of play, skill level, and choice of ship (which range from speedy fighters to heavy bombers), so we'll be interested to see how that plays out when it comes time for our review.

There'll also be a constant drip feed of new missions and ships through periodic updates.

Strike Wing: Raptor Rising is a Universal app for iPhone and iPad. It will cost 69p / 99c when it hits the UK and US App Stores at around midnight.
