Don't call it iPad 5 - Apple unveils thinner, lighter iPad Air

The new iPad is not called the iPad 5 - it's called an iPad Air.

That's because, like the razor-thin MacBook Air, this upcoming iPad is much thinner and lighter than its predecessors. It's 7.5mm thin, and weighs just one pound, which is far lighter than the 1.4 pound iPad 4.

It also has a smaller bezel. It's 43 percent thinner than before on the sides, making it look more like an iPad mini. But it still has that massive 9.7 inch display.

Under the hood it's got that beefy A7 chip that you can find inside the iPhone 5S. That means it's got 64 bit architecture, and is twice as fast, with double the graphics performance, of the iPad 4.

It's also 72 times faster than the first iPad, if you like numbers.

The iPad Air also has multiple wifi antennas for faster connectivity, a 5 megapixel iSight camera, 1080p video capability, dual microphones, and that same 10 hour battery life.

iPad Air

This new device comes in silver and white, and space grey and black. It will replace the iPad 4 in shops, and will start at £399 / $499 for the wi-fi model and £499 / $629 for the 4G version.

You can get it in 16, 32, 64, and 128GB versions.

It will go on sale on November 1st around the world. And it will probably add a few to Apple's 170 million total iPad sales.
