Most anyone who's spent time in a movie theater over the past twenty years can vouch for the enduring popularity of light gun shooters like Area 51.

Now, DeNA's looking to bring this arcade-style of game to the App Store with the upcoming run and gun shooter, Lawless.

Borrowing its themes and setting from the 1990s Pacino / De Niro crime drama Heat, Lawless puts you in the body armor of a cop charged with cleaning up the crime-infested streets of Los Angeles with all manner of weaponry.

We had a chance to see a bit of Lawless in action earlier this autumn, and saw that it had a branching level progression similar to the great light gun arcade games of yesteryear. In other words, after dispatching of all the criminals on one screen you'll be given the option to go left or right and move on to other encounters.

The Unity-powered shooter is free-to-play, as one would expect from DeNA, and is geared to short 2-5 minute play sessions.

Like The Drowning, Lawless integrates rather innovative tap-based controls that allow players to shoot with one finger or two with a new option to tap on the bottom of the screen to keep fingers from obscuring the action.

Take a look at the trailer below and decide if you think this is something you'd like on your iPhone or iPad. If so, we'll keep you updated with news of a release date when we have it.

If you'd like to pre-reg for the game and pick up the dual-glock bonus item, check out the official page here.
