Beyond: Two Souls is the latest game from barmy French autuer David Cage. And it's out on PlayStation 3 this week.

More important to us, however, is the fact there's an interesting companion app for Beyond: Two Souls that enables you to control the game with your smartphone.

We've given Beyond Touch a go, and have written up a quick How To so you'll have everything you need to know if you want to play the game on your iPhone on Friday.

This free companion app is designed to welcome new players who want to try this intriguing interactive drama but are scared off by all the analogue sticks and buttons and flashing lights on the PS3 pad.

If we just described you, then read on.

Beyond The first thing to do is load up Beyond: Two Souls, and either start a new game or continue from your last save. Each time you do this, you will be asked if you're playing solo or with a friend, and which controller you wish to use. Once you have selected either 'Solo' or 'Duo', you need to go grab your smartphone or tablet.
Beyond Download the free Beyond Touch app from the App Store or Google Play. Once it has been installed on your device, load the app, hit 'Play' and tap on the icon of a smartphone connecting to a PS3. The app will search and connect. The app will only work if your phone and PlayStation 3 are on the same wi-fi network. You can set that up from the settings area on both your smartphone and console.
Beyond Once your gadgets are connected, you'll see a controller layout on your smartphone's screen. Tap the 'X' button to load the game.
Beyond If everything is working correctly, you should now be able to play Beyond: Two Souls with your phone. First things first, you can move your thumb around the touchscreen to make Jodie walk about.
Beyond If you see a white dot appear on your screen, you can give your phone a quick tap to make Jodie interact with that hotspot. If the dot has a square around it, that means you can hold a thumb on the screen to interact with that object for as long as you're holding.
Beyond To look around the environment, you need to hold one finger on the 'eye' button in the bottom-left-hand corner of the touchscreen, and then pan your finger around the display.
Beyond More interactions will be possible as you play through the game. If you forget the controls, there's a 'question mark' button you can press to peruse the previous tutorials.
Beyond If you get sick of using your phone or want to graduate to a proper controller, you'll need to quit the game and then choose the 'SixAxis/Dualshock 3' option when you next load your save game.
