The creator of the original Mutant League Football is hoping to Kickstart a new version of the violent sports game

In the old days of video gaming, before everything was an FPS or a city-building sim, developers liked to take popular sports and bathe them in comical cartoon violence.

One of the chief games in this genre was Mutant League Football. It was American football mixed with radioactive violence, hulking monsters, and a decent helping of gore.

The series was pretty successful. Then, however, game developers grew up and started thinking about things like shooting men with turrets, tanks, and precision air strikes. Oh, and people began to demand realism from their gaming experience.

Well, creator and lead designer of the original 16-bit Mutant League Football Michael Mendheim has decided it's high time squishy hilarious violence made an on-the-field comeback. And he's launched a Kickstarter campaign to make it a reality.

Look - here's the pitch video to prove it.

Mendheim is looking to raise an eye-watering $750,000 to reboot the series. He's promising to employ a crack team of developers and designers if he reaches his sky-high funding goal.

If Mendheim's campaign is a success, then you can expect a new Mutant League Football for iOS and Android tablets, featuring dirty tricks, decapitations, and clouds of blood. Sounds lovely.

There is, of course, a variety of backer rewards, one of which is a knuckle duster that doubles as a bottle opener. I think that gives you a decent idea about the audience to whom this game is being pitched.

If you want to throw some money into the yawning gullet of a well-forgotten retro gaming niche, then you can do so right now by checking out the Mutant League Football Kickstarter.
